Support Energy Transition Act (SB489)

New Mexico has a huge opportunity to be a national leader in the transition from coal to renewable energy.

The Energy Transition Act will help New Mexico address climate change. This legislation requires utilities to get 50% of their electricity from renewables by 2030, 80% by 2040, and be 100% carbon-free by 2045. It also helps PNM shut down the San Juan Generating Station, a coal-fired power plant near Farmington.

The bill is strongly supported by Gov. Michelle Lujan Grisham, and sponsored by Sens. Jacob Candelaria and Mimi Stewart, Rep. Nathan Small, and Speaker Egolf.
