SB 391, Extend Solar Market Development Tax Credit, sponsored by Sen. Mimi Stewart is ready to go to the House floor. This bill extends the current tax credit for residential, commercial, and agricultural solar installations that is set to expire on Dec. 31, 2016. An amendment extends the current 10% tax credit through 2018, drops to 9% through 2020, then tapers off one percent a year through 2024.
Solar energy is great for New Mexico. It reduces air and water pollution, improves public health, and creates jobs. This tax credit has assisted the booming local industry, which grew 73% from 2012 to 2013, for a total of 1,900 solar jobs in New Mexico.
As the second sunniest state, we only get 2% of our electricity from the sun – far below our potential. SB391 already passed the Senate with strong bipartisan support (37-5), and we need the House of Representatives to do the same.
